ATBU (Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University)

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University which is also known as ATBU is a federal university of technology situated in the northern part of Nigeria. ATBU took its name after Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the first Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Institution came to existence in the year 1980 and as at then was named the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi. The motto for this great institution is “Doctrina Mater Artium”, which in the English Language means “Education is the mother of the practical arts”. The institution began to admit students in October 1981 for remedial and pre-degree programmes. Meanwhile, the degree courses of the School of Science and Science Education started the following year, October 1982.

The institution was later merged with Ahmadu Bello University located in Zaria On 1 October 1984, followed by a change of name of the institution into Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi campus. After four (4) years, in 1988, the institution later regained its autonomous status and this was as a result of the general demerger institutions.

After the autonomous status, the institution later changed its name to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (which is still currently used).

In 1980 the institution was able to create an academic pattern and this was after meeting with professionals from the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Nigeria. The institution has six (6) schools through which they offer its degrees. The schools include the school of Science, Engineering, Agriculture,  Environmental Technology, Technology Education, and the School of Management Technology.

The institution offers both Doctorate degrees, Masters, and even entry-level bachelor’s degrees. Just like other Universities, each of the school is headed by a Dean who is accountable to the VC (Vice-Chancellor). Meanwhile, The Vice-Chancellor is accountable to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
