O’Level Subjects and Requirements for Philosophy
To be able eligible to study philosophy under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities in the above-mentioned Universities, then you must ensure you satisfy their O’Level requirements. Candidates applying are expected to have at least five (5) SSCE credit passes in the following subjects:
1). Mathematics.
2). English Language.
3). And three (3) other relevant subjects.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION AND REMARKS
1). AAUA requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, one (1) Arts subject and two (2) other relevant subjects.
2). BSU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language and four (4) Social Sciences.
3). BOWEN requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language and any two (2) other subjects from Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences. It also requires an ‘O’ level pass in Physics or Mathematics.
4). EBSU requires the following:
i). For Philosophy, they require five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include Mathematics, English Language at not more than two (2) sittings. A pass in two (2) principal subjects at the NCE.
ii). For Religion, they require five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings and it will include Religious studies, Mathematics, English Language, and passes in two (2) principal subjects at the NCE.
5). UNILAG and UNI-IBADAN require five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language and one (1) Arts subject.
6). UNIPORT requires a credit pass in Mathematics.
7). UHIELE requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, and any two (2) other Arts or Social Science subjects. It also requires at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics. Also, candidates MUST be sponsored by a Catholic Diocese
8). FED-LAFIA requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Literature-in-English and any other relevant subjects.
9). UNIUYO requires at least ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics and an ‘O’ level credit pass in one (1) Science subject.
10). UNILAG requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, one (1) Arts and any two (2) Social Sciences and Science. It also accepts Civic Education.
11). NDU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language and any other four (4) subjects which two (2) must be from Arts and two (2) Social Sciences.
12). UNI-IBADAN, OOU, AAU, OAU, IMSU, and KSU require at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
13). OAU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, one (1) Arts subject and an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
14). UNIBEN requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes or Merit passes in TC II which shouldn’t be in more than two (2) sittings. The subjects should include English Language and any other two (2) subjects from Social Sciences or Arts. It also requires at least an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
JAMB Subject Combination for Philosophy
UTME candidates are to be informed that English Language is Compulsory subject in JAMB UTME. The remaining three subjects that you are going to meet in your UTME examination includes:
- Any three (3) subjects.

1). AUGUSTINE requires any three (3) Arts subjects.
2). AAUA, OAU, and AAU require at least one (1) Arts subject.
3). SAU and BOWEN require Government or History in addition to any other Arts subjects.
4). FED-LAFIA requires CRS/IS, Literature-in-English and any other relevant subject.
5). EBSU requires Mathematics.
6). UNILAG requires one (1) Arts and any other two (2) Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences.
7). IBADAN requires one (1) Arts subject and any two (2) subjects from Social Sciences, Arts or Sciences.
Direct Entry Admission Requirements
Candidates who want to apply directly without the use of UTME, are expected to satisfy the following direct entry admission requirements for Philosophy.
- Any two (2) ‘A’ level passes.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION AND REMARKS
1). AAUA requires two (2) ‘A’ level subjects or ND in Law, Religious Studies or Philosophy from approved Institutions or NCE merit.
2). AAU accepts Two (2) ‘A’ level passes with three (3) ‘O’ level credit passes or three (3) A’ level passes with two (2) ‘O’ level credit passes.
3). AUGUSTINE accepts ND credit/NCE merit in relevant program/subjects plus five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes or equivalent.
4). BSU accepts ‘A’ level passes/NCE to include African Religion, CRS or its equivalent.
5). BOWEN accepts two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Philosophy and any other subject.
6). UNI-IBADAN requires two (2) ‘A’ level passes which one must be from Arts subject and any other Social Sciences/Arts/Sciences subject.
7). UNICAL requires any two (2) ‘A’ level passes which must be in relevant subjects.
8). SAU accepts two (2) ‘A’ level subjects which must include Government and any two (2) other Arts subjects or at NCE in History or Government.
9). UNIUYO also requires passes from two (2) ‘A’ level subjects or NCE or ND in cognate subject/program, at merit/credit level.
10). OAU requires two (2) ‘A’ level passes in which one (1) should come from an Arts subject.
11). EKSU, UNIPORT, and IMSU – No Direct Entry.
12). UNILAG requires three (3) very good passes in JUPEB/’A’ level subjects:
i). Any three (3) of Igbo/Yoruba, Literature in English, CRS/IS, History, French, Economics, Physics, Government, Chemistry, Biology but at least one (1) Arts subject.
ii). Related programs in which you must score a minimum of 55% average score.
iii). NCE credit in two (2) teaching subjects in which one (1) must be an Arts subject.
iv). Candidates must also ensure they satisfy the UTME requirements.
13). UNIBEN accepts the following:
i). An NCE (overall) credit in the Liberal Arts.
ii). First degree in any program.
iii). HND (upper credit) /ND in Mass Communication.
14). EBSU and OOU require an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
15). NDU accepts the following:
i). A minimum of two (2) ‘A’ level pass in relevant subjects and three (3) ‘O’ level subjects which must include an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.
ii). NCE merit in any Science or Arts subjects, especially Mathematics for sciences.
