The institution was founded in 1975 and currently has over 45,000 students. UNIPORT is actually a second-generation University with much focus in Petroleum Engineering. The institution started out as a University College, UNIPORT then later moved on to be a full-fledged University in 1977. They are presently ranked among the list of top ten Universities in Nigeria.
University of Port Hacourt (UNIPORT)
The University has been able to produce notable individuals in the country and has also recorded groundbreaking achievements. They where the first University in Nigeria to produce the first set of nuclear engineers in the country (Nigeria).
In 2015 University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) was ranked as the sixth most rated University in Africa and the first (1st) in Nigeria by THE (Times Higher Education).
The institution later built a center of excellence in oilfield chemicals with the grant they won from the World Bank.
The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is also noted as one of the universities in Nigeria, involved in the study of business ethics as well as indigenous entrepreneurship development.
The institution in 1977 only had six schools which are; the (1) School of Biological Sciences, (2) School of Chemical Sciences, (3) School of Educational Studies (4) School of Humanities, (5) School of Physical Sciences, (6) School of Social Sciences, (7) School of Science Laboratory Technology.
In 1982 the institution changed from a school system to a Faculty system. The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) currently has twelve (12) faculties which consist of;
