O’Level Subjects & Requirements

UTME candidates are expected to have at least five (5) SSC credit passes which must include the following O’Level (NECO, GCE, WAEC) subjects for Linguistics:

1). English Language.
2). Literature-In-English.
3). Mathematics.
4). Any two (2) Arts/Social Science subjects.

PLEASE NOTE: LINGUISTICS is under the faculty of Arts and Humanities and it shares the same UTME requirement above with other courses like; Linguistics and African Language, Linguistics and Communication Studies, Linguistics and Urhobo, Linguistics/Yoruba, Linguistics with Igbo/Yoruba.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION FOR UNIVERSITIES

1). BSU requires at least five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences and it must include Lit.-in-English.

2). AAUA requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, one (1) Language, in addition to any other two (2) Arts/Social Sciences.

3). EBSU requires an ‘O’ level credit pass in Mathematics and an ‘O’ level credit pass in one (1) Nigerian Language will be an advantage.

4). UNILORIN and UI require ‘O’ level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences. UNILORIN requires at least one (1) Nigerian Language or Literature-in-English and one (1) other Arts subject. Meanwhile, UNILORIN also accepts Science subjects.

5). DELSU requires an ‘O’ level credit pass in Literature-in-English.

6). KWASU requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Lit.-in-English, any other three (3) Arts/Social Science/Science subjects in addition to an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.

7). UNILAG requires five (5) ‘O’ level credits passes which must include Mathematics, English Language, and three (3) other subjects from Arts, Sciences, or Social Sciences. Civic Education and Social Studies are also accepted.

8). UNN requires the as in Linguistics, Igbo, and other Nigerian Languages.

9). UNIBEN requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Literature-in-English, one (1) Arts subject, and an ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.

10). UNIUYO and UNIOSUN require an ‘O’ level credit pass in Literature in English.

11). UI requires five (5) or six (6) ‘O’ level credit passes at one (1) or two (2) sittings which must include English Language, Arts, and any other two (2) subjects. Credit passes in Mathematics, and African language will be an advantage.

12). UNILORIN requires ‘O’ level credit passes in Social Sciences and Arts, at least one (1) Nigerian Language or Literature in English, and one (1) other Arts subject.

UTME candidates should expect to see four (4) subjects in their JAMB UTME examination. Below are the four (4) proper JAMB UTME subjects for Linguistics:

1). English Language(Compulsory for all courses).
2). Literature-In-English.
3). Any one (1) Language.
4). And one (1) other subject.

9). UNIOSUN accepts any three (3) Arts subjects.

Direct Entry Admission Requirements For Linguistics

Direct Entry candidates are required to meet the conditions listed below to be qualified to study Linguistics under the faculty of Arts and Humanities.

  • Two (2) ‘A’ level passes or NCE to include any Language (An African Language most preferably).

PLEASE NOTE: LINGUISTICS is under the faculty of Arts and Humanities and it shares the same Direct Entry (DE) requirement above with other courses like; Linguistics and African Language, Linguistics and Communication Studies, Linguistics and Urhobo, Linguistics/Yoruba, Linguistics with Igbo/Yoruba.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION FOR UNIVERSITIES

1). UNN requires the same as in Igbo, Linguistics, and other Nigerian.

2). UNIUYO accepts NCE merit in any Nigerian Language.

3). UI accepts the following:
i). Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include any Language ( an African Languagemost preferably) and another Arts or Social Science subject.
ii). NCE to include any Language ( an African Languagemost preferably) and another Arts or Social Science subject at merit or credit level. PLEASE NOTE A certified knowledge of another language other than English Language will be an added advantage. It’s also an advantage if the Direct Entry or UTME subjects include Literature in English.

4). AAUA accepts NCE credit/Merit in Yoruba, Mass Communication, and Journalism.

5). EKSU requires two (2) ‘A’ level passes or NCE credit in Social Sciences, Arts, or Sciences to include any language preferably a Nigerian Language.

6). UNILAG requires very good passes in three (3) JUPEB ‘A’ level subjects to include:
i). Yoruba/Igbo and any two (2) of CRS/IS, History, Government, French, Music, Literature-in-English, Visual Arts.
ii). NCE merit in two (2) subjects which must include a Nigerian Language.
iii). Candidates must also satisfy the UTME requirements in addition.

7). UNICAL accepts NCE/ND in Foreign Language, Linguistics, or any Nigerian language.

8). UNIJOS and UNIBEN – No Direct Entry.

9). UNILORIN accepts ND in Linguistics as well as requires an ‘A’ level passes or NCE with a major in Language and any two (2) Social Sciences/ Arts/Sciences subjects.

10). IBADAN and UNILORIN require ‘A’ level or NCE merit in the Social Sciences, Arts, or Science subjects provided one (1) of the subjects is in the Social Sciences.

11). BSU accepts two (2) NCE/ ‘A’ level passes which must include French, English Language, or any African Language, and one (1) other Arts subject.

12). UNIOSUN requires an ‘A’ level pass in Literature in English. They also accept ND (lower credit) Mass Communication as well as approved equivalent in communication program.
