Admission Requirement for English Language

JAMB Subject Combination for English Language

All the admission requirements listed on this page are in line with the JAMB Official Brochure. Other additional information added on this page includes the list of places you can work with a degree in English Language. Below are the admission requirements for English Language.

O’Level Subject Combination for English Language

UTME and Direct Entry (DE) candidates are expected to have not less than five (5) SSC credit passes in the required subjects listed below.

1). English Language.
2). Literature-in-English.
3). And three (3) other Arts or Social Science subjects.

NOTE: The UTME Requirement above is the same for courses like;

  • English Language and Communication Studies.
  • English Language and Literature.

WAIVER/SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

1). AUGUSTINE credit in Mathematics is not compulsory.

2). UNIUYO and AUE require an ‘O’ level credit pass in Maths and any two (2) Social Science or Arts subjects.

3). UNIBEN and BAYERO require one (1) other Arts subject.

4). ABU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Literature-in-English, and any other Social Science or Arts subjects.

5). OAU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language and Literature-in-English and one (1) other Arts subject in addition to any other subject.

6). REDEEMER and UNIKINGS require five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include Literature-in-English, English Language, and a pass in Mathematics.

7). COVENANT and EBSU also require ‘O’ level credit passes in Mathematics and two (2) other Social Science or Arts subjects.

8). EDWIN CLARK also requires an ‘O’ level credit pass in Government.

9). UMYUK requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes or its equivalent including Literature-in-English, English Language, and any other three (3) subjects from Social Sciences or Arts, and a credit pass in Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.

10). AUN does not offer admissions direct to 200 level and may transfer credits relevant to its major at the discretion of the Dean of School.

11). BIU requires the three (3) ‘O’ level subjects to come from either Social Sciences or Arts.

12). UNIBEN, JOS, and BSU accept TCII merit.

13). AUN does not accept five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in the following; Food and Nutrition, Agriculture, Home Economics, Home management, Home Craft, Physical Education, Music, Commerce, Physical and Health Education, Accounting, Bookkeeping, Islamic History, Financial Accounting, Library Studies, Religious Studies, Tajweed, Diction, Igbo, Kiswahili, Hausa, Turkish, Yoruba, Arabic, Study skills.

14). REDEEMER’S and FED-DUTSE accept ‘O’ level pass in Mathematics.

15). FED-DUTSE accepts five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include Mathematics, English Language, two (2) Arts subjects, and one (1) Social Sciences. FED-DUTSE considers Literature-in-English an added advantage.

16). SLUK requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, one (1) Arts subject, and another Social Science or Arts subject.

17). UNIPORT requires Literature-in-English.

18). AJAYI requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Literature-in-English, English Language, another Arts subject, and any other two (2) subjects.

19). KWASU requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Literature-in-English in addition to two (2) Arts subjects and one (1) Social Science/Science subject.

20). FED-DUTSINMA requires five (5) ‘O’ level credits passes which must include Mathematics and Literature in English.

21). AUN accepts:
i). ‘A’ level passes which must include Economics, Mathematics, Geography, History, Government, Literature in English, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Technical Drawing, Information Technology, Environmental Science, Civics, Biology, Physics, French, and Chemistry.
ii). HND/ND.
iii). ICGSE and ‘A’ level Cambridge.

22). ILORIN accepts any Social Science / Arts subjects.

23). LAGOS requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes in Mathematics, Literature-in-English, English Language, and any two (2) of History/Government, French, CRS/IS, and any Nigerian Language.

24). NTNU accepts any Social Science/Arts subjects.

24). BAYERO requires five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, Literature-in-English in addition to three (3) other Arts subjects.

25). IBADAN requires six (6) or five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes at two (2) or one (1) sittings to include English Language, Literature-in-English, one (1) other Arts subject, and any other three (3) or two (2) subjects from Arts, Social Sciences or Science.

26). LAGOS and FED-LAFIA require five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must include Mathematics, English Language, Literature-in-English, and one (1) other Arts subject.

JAMB UTME Subject Combination for English Language

There are three (3) subjects UTME candidates are going to face in the JAMB UTME examination and they include the following subjects:

1). English Language.
2). Literature-in-English.
3). One Arts or Social Science subject.

NOTE: The UTME Subject Combination above is the same for courses like;

  • English Language and Communication Studies.
  • English Language and Literature.

WAIVER/SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

1). FED-DUTSE accepts two (2) Arts subjects and any other Social Science or Arts subjects.

2). CHRISTOPHER requires one (1) Social Sciences and one (1) Arts subject.

3). SLUK accepts any two (2) Arts subjects and one (1) other Social Science or Arts subject.

4). NTNU accepts any three (3) Social Science or Arts subjects.

5). EBSU requires any two (2) of CRS, History, Government, French, etc as the other subjects.

6). LAGOS requires Literature-in-English and any two (2) subjects from CRS/IS, History, Government, French, and any Nigerian Language.

7). FED-DUTSE also accepts Literature-in-English and Mathematics.

8). BOWEN does not accept any Social Science subject.

9). SOSU accepts two (2) Arts subjects and any other Social Science subject.

10). ABU, AUGUSTINE, and FED-LOKOJA require Literature-in-English and any other two (2) Social Science or Arts subjects.

11). SAU and AUE require Government/History, Literature in English, or any other Arts subject.

12). FED-DUTSINMA requires Literature-in-English, one (1) other Arts subject, and another Arts or Social Science subject.

Direct Entry Admission Requirements for English Language

Candidates who don’t intend to apply to study English Language in any higher institution through UTME are expected to meet the direct entry admission requirements to study English Language.

  • Two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Literature-in-English and one (1) other Arts subject.

NOTE: The Direct Entry Requirements above are also the same for courses like;

  • English Language and Communication Studies.
  • English Language and Literature.

WAIVER/SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

1). AUE requires ND credit or NCE merit in addition to the UTME requirements.

2). MAIDUGURI, AUE, ILORIN, COOU, UNIZIK, JOS, and UDU accept NCE with English Language major, candidates to spend one extra year in UNIZIK.

3). EBSU also accepts NCE merit in English Language.

4). AAU accepts ND credit in Mass Comm.

5). FED-DUTSE accepts two (2) ‘A’ levels which must include English Language and a total minimum of nine (9) points.

6). UNIOSUN requires two (2) ‘A’ level passes which must include Literature-in-English and other NCE or Arts subjects in English/and any other Arts subjects.

7). AUGUSTINE accepts HND credit or NCE merit plus UTME requirements.

8). UNIUYO requires at least nine (9) points with three (3) or two (2) GCE ‘A’ level subjects or their equivalent. They also accept GCE ‘A’ level in Literature-in-English and English Language / NCE pass in relevant subjects.

9). IMSU and UNIPORT do not accept Direct Entry.

10). NSUK accepts NCE merit in English Language.

11). AL-HIKMAH requires two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Literature-in-English.

12). UNILAG requires very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/’A’ level subjects which must include Literature in English and any two (2) of Yoruba/Igbo, History, CRS, IS, Music, Government, French, and Fine Arts.

13). PLASU accepts any of the following:
i). At least seven (7) IJMB points in relevant subjects plus the UTME requirements.
ii). ND lower credit in a relevant program in addition to the UTME requirements.
iii). HND lower credits in the relevant program plus UTME requirements,
iv). A degree in any program provided by the candidate in question provides the UTME requirements.

14). TSUJ accepts an NCE English Major.

15). MCPHERSON accepts IJMB/JUPEB ‘A’level or equivalent in related subjects.

16). GSU, NAU, and AJAYI accept NCE merit in Literature in English.

17). FED-DUTSINMA accepts NCE/ND with good grades in any relevant subject/program.

18). NTNU accepts any two (2) ‘A’ level passes in Social Science or Arts subjects, NCE merit, or ND/HND lower credit in relevant subjects/programs.

19). CHRISTOPHER accepts NCE, HND, or ND with credit passes in relevant subjects/programs.

20). UNIBEN accepts NCE credit in English Language as a major subject.

21). KWASU accepts NCE with an English major.

22). AJAYI accepts two (2) ‘A’ level passes or its equivalent in Literature-in-English, one (1) other Arts subject in addition to three (3) ‘O’ level credit passes.

23). UNILORIN requires NCE with an English major or English Language in combination with other teaching Subjects.

24). UI accepts NCE merit in two (2) teaching subjects which must include Literature in English (Not General English) plus the UTME requirements. It also accepts two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Literature in English.

25). UMYUK accepts NCE in relevant subjects plus five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes which must not be at more than two (2) sittings.

26). BIU requires NCE merit in three (3) subjects or two (2) ‘A’ level passes at relevant subjects or ND credit in relevant programs in addition to the UTME requirements.

27). ABU accepts two (2) ‘A’ level passes which must include Literature in English, NCE/IJMB. The use of English/General English at NCE satisfies UTME requirements.

28). EBSU accepts ND credit or NCE merit in relevant programs/subjects.
